On the Road for Spring Break
Fairhope Alabama in April smells like honeysuckle and magnolia and the people who live here don’t need to buy Easter lilies at the grocery store because they grow in their backyards this time of year.
We were drawn to the fountain at the pier and to the girls posing in Easter dresses. I had forgotten it was Easter Sunday until we stopped at a Walmart to buy Joe some sandals (because he forgot his) and I saw a lady buying baskets of stuffed bunnies and chocolate.
There were egg hunts on the green in the park and gulls fighting over the cheese-its that a young girl was tossing in the air. (Video clip HERE.)
Our Easter bonnets had no frills, just bike caps to keep the sun out, but these strange sparkly blooms made up for our lack of frills. Joe thought they looked like caterpillars and I said they looked like water bottle brushes.
We bicycled along the shore and stopped to watch a heron stand utterly still for about five minutes. Later, at the local Oyster House, and after enjoying some cold draught beers, I said to Joe, “Do you think we need a designated biker?”

You called the bloom right Colleen. My grandfather raised bottlebrushes back when he had a nursery here on the Texas coast.
Wikipedia has this to say:
It seems the species originated in Australia.

Thanks Gary! Only had a little hangover this morning, Tabor. Lucky we could sleep on the beach a little.

WOW! I thought it was some weird bug, not a flower at all. Very interesting to say the least.
I wish I could have a whiff of the honeysuckle and magnolia……..my favorite.

Great shot of the gulls and the brilliant bottle brush (it sure looks like those we have in Australia, the botanical name for which is Callistemon).

A good Catholic girl like you forgetting it’s Easter? Tut-tut…but like Christ, I forgive you.

We made up for it, Rob, by visiting the Cathedral Basilica, the oldest running cathedral in the country, today. Very impressive and I got a big hit of Easter lily fragrance.
