Floyd’s First Lyme Symposium
-The following first appeared in The Floyd Press on May 28, 2015.
Floyd’s first Lyme Symposium took place May 16th at the EcoVillage. Organized by Margie Scott, the “Tick Talks” educational event drew over 100 attendees. Scott, who heads up the Floyd County Lyme Disease (LD) Support Network, said people came from all over the region and from as far away as Pennsylvania and North Carolina.
Dr. Janine Talty, who has been treating Lyme patients for over 10 years in Roanoke, gave a keynote address titled “Treatment Strategies-Putting a New Lens on Chronic Disease.” She addressed the steps that can be taken for better diagnosis and treatment strategies for LD, which has been reported by the CDC to affect about 300,000 people yearly in the United States, an estimate that some consider low because so many LD cases go undiagnosed.
Floyd chiropractor Dr. Garry Collins, who just released a new book called REGENESIS: A Pathway to Recover Your Health, referred to Lyme as the “most under-diagnosed, over-diagnosed and mis-diagnosed disease” during his speaker’s presentation. He stressed the importance of proper diet, pure water, reducing stress and environmental chemical exposure for treating LD and other chronic diseases.
A total of 12 presenters shared information on the history of LD and other tick borne diseases, LD prevention guidelines, resources, techniques for emotional healing, integrative treatment approaches and more. Many of the symposium attendees were LD patients or survivors of LD. Some told their personal stories of living with disease.
A Mom’s Spot for mother’s and babies was provided during the 9 to 5 symposium, and a wholesome lunch was catered by Cast Iron Catering. There was also a Quiet Spot where some attendees stretched out on couches or received massages. The event, funded in part by the CERC (Community Education Resource Coop), Citizen’s Coop and The Floyd Fund, closed with moderated questions and answers that were posed to a panel of three health practitioners.

I was bit by a Lymes filled tick a decade ago and it manifested itself with the bulls eye and traditional stiffness on one side of my body, therefore I was lucky to catch it early. I have neighbors on both sides who have contracted various tick diaereses and one still has side effects. It may be over diagnosed, but they still miss it!!

Sounds like a great idea! There is still not enough awareness of lyme.
