The Debut

vcm3

It was worth it to catch a ride to Roanoke from a friend who got a speeding ticket on the way, to fly from Roanoke to LaGuardia where I almost missed the plane and then lost my boarding pass, to go from LaGuardia to Logan where I got picked up by my sister and her husband after they got stuck in Boston traffic. It was worth all that and more to walk into the nursing home the next day where my mother is currently living, to sit down beside her and watch the look of surprise come over her face as it registered who I was.

The last time I was home and visiting her was last November when she was still in her home.  I surprised myself by crying when I saw her this time.

It was also worth the expense and the wear and tear of travel to meet my great-great niece Violet for the first time and to be present for a momentous five-generation photo shoot that will go down in the Redman family history books.

vg2Violet is 8 days old and my  mother is 90.  The other principal players of the day were Violet’s mother Samantha, her great grandmother Kathy (my sister) and her grandmother Chrissie.

Violet slept through most of the five generation party but still managed to strike this pose in which she seems to be saying, “dahling, snap away.” That’s my sister Sherry, a great-great aunt like me, who was also part of the celebration.
