We Used to Be Closer
The moon is slipping away
Every year two inches further
Giving the earth the cold shoulder
Making each day a little longer
Every year the earth grows heavier
with the weight of space debris
with the loss of gravitational pull
and the moon’s close affection
Like star crossed lovers
who’ve been taken for granted
who’ve lost their spark
over the past few billion years
The moon and earth
are like an old married couple
facing the inevitable
drifting apart

Did you write this with your tongue against cheek. You do the moon(s) better and more than anyone I know. You just might be a moon child at heart.

The twist here is that this is true: The moon moves about two inches away from the Earth each year. http://www.bbc.com/news/science-environment-12311119 The Earth gets 100 tons heavier every day due to falling space dust. http://www.thenakedscientists.com/HTML/questions/question/2141/

I did not know this. It is sad. Everything changes and nothing stays the same and that is the challenge, is it not?

It’s true that the moon is inching farther away from us. This is just a perfect poem, and “star-crossed lovers” fits so well.

I hope it is not inevitable… I know some (a few) marriages that both drifted together and made something new and wonderful happen.
I’m already lonesome for the moon now : )

This is such an enjoyable poem…the change in status quo is inevitable perhaps…

And imagine a life without tide.. we need the moon…

Oh dear, I hate to think that this is so! But you have written it very well.

Thank you for the links. If the earth dog, one day decides to have a good shake, I wonder if we fleas and space debris will be flung out into the wild stratosphere.

There are instances sadly that this happens. Love nurtured are just not sustainable. But there are reasons obviously

This can be a metaphor for some couples ~ But then without each other, we will be drifting away ~
Good to see you Colleen ~

Very much enjoyed the imaginative flight here that puts the two planets together as lovers – you sustain this strongly and delicately too throughout – Lovely… With Best Wishes Scott http://www.scotthastie.com

I love your take on star-crossed lovers between the earth and moon…very clever. I really enjoyed this.

lovely Colleen! And I can’t help saying this – two inches may not seem like much but in my miniscule world its drift is devastating….!
