Old Mill Shadows
This is the restaurant in Hingham, Massachusetts where my sister Kathy and her husband Ozzie met. Kathy was a waitress there, back when it was called Ye Olde Mill Grille. They were both single parents with young daughters the same age at the time.
My mother worked for decades as a waitress at the Grille, where she was known for her sharp memory and never writing orders down. Two of my brothers worked in the kitchen during high school. I remember the thrill of going there as a teenager, being waited on by my mother and ordering my favorite, a grilled crabmeat sandwich.
With nine kids, we hardly ever ate out because we couldn’t afford to. So I was really excited the first time I ate at the Grille when I was invited by my best friend Laura and her mother. I remember we ordered chicken croquettes, which was like some foreign delicacy to me at the time.
The Grille was built in 1723 with parts of the structure dating back to 1643. It used to be a grain mill. The way it’s set up always made me feel that we were eating in the deck of a boat.
It’s an old school timber framed building, and for me, it’s filled with shadows of the past and the bright light of oldie but goodie memories.

I love the looks of this classic New England eatery – nowhere else in the US has this classic style. I can remember restaurants when I was young – since I was one of seven children, restaurant eating was very rare for us too. Great shadows and memories too 🙂

They don’t make them like that in this day and age of chain/franchisee restaurants and dinners. Your holding on to that support post as one would hold an old friend reunited. I some ways, have read here for awhile now, it seems the shadows of your roots have been found where you now call home.

WOW! I didn’t realize you went here. Is the food still good. I will have to visit it with Nelson. Kim says her daughters love the place.
The pictures are great and looks a lot like I remember it, when it was Ye Olde Mill Grille!!

Descent food. We especially liked Joe’s broiled fish and fries.
