Where for art thou, Mario?
It wouldn’t have been my first choice to be Mario for Halloween. The video game character doesn’t express or contradict any part of my psyche, which is usually what I go for with my yearly Halloween get-ups. I’ve never even played a Mario video game (or any video game for that matter), but we got the hats from our grandsons and I knew they would get a kick out of seeing us in character.
My Mario costume worked only because Joe was Luigi and a great one at that, so tall and lanky like the character. He even had suspenders and a Mario Brothers’ plunger for a prop. My only prop was being next to him. I had wanted to wear a tie dye shirt under my red jacket for a more original “Mario does The Kind at the Pine Tavern” touch, but, believe it or not, I didn’t have a single tie dye and neither did Joe. He stopped at the thrift shop on his way home from babysitting the boys on Halloween day and looked for one. The check-out person was flabbergasted, ‘What, you come from Floyd and don’t have a tie dye?’
Well at least I didn’t have to carry a big baby head around, like the person in the picture above. I did admire the tie dye the big baby head wore and thought it would have been perfect for my Mario.
My mustache hurt when I pulled it off during dress rehearsal, but after dancing to a set of the Kind’s fantastic Grateful Dead covers, and by the time we headed over to Dogtown Roadhouse to catch the powerhouse sound of Soundwave, sweat from dancing made my mustache fall off.

I despise stereotypes. Though I must confess. I was thinking the same before I read, ‘What, you come from Floyd and don’t have a tie dye?’
So saree.
