In Answer to ‘How Are You?’
I’m starting to like sauerkraut
I’m worried that the water
in the chicken coop has frozen
I need a haircut
And ever since I saw that serrated spoon
in the silverware drawer this morning
I’ve been thinking about grapefruit
Awesome is for narcissists
and fine is for china
Today I ordered a hat pin from Amazon
and googled “psychopaths that don’t murder”
Good is for those absolved of sin
and well is for water
I keep a Scrabble dictionary
in the back seat of my car
and a kaleidoscope in my glove compartment
What else do you need to know?

I love it! It reminds me of the style of the Liverpool[poets of the 60s and 70s – Adrian Henry etc.

Thank you! And what a delight to just now google and read Adrian Henri’s poetry. I do feel a kinship with his style!

i really love this–it flows, doesn’t it. Some poems seem to be carved out of granite, this one just slides down the page.
Funny you should mention psychopaths, Im reading a book by Jonathan Kellerman about just that kind of thing.
Nice poem to find at 5 AM, thank you.

There is something so coherent without it being so.. I feel like I weave a pattern, much like finding a constellation in a fistful of stars.

Oh, I hate that question. But if those who asked it had the patience, I’d love to give an answer like this, if I could.

You could have driven your teachers a little batty.

I like the stream of images here – like a visit inside your consciousness.

Worth giving a truthful answer when it’s that interesting! 🙂

“Research” here in spades, digging up all the goods beneath such an ephemeral question as the title. It begs a response from so many of our selves. What is sufficient? this poem / There’s a cloistered mid-winter cabin-feverish flush to this, a note short of desperation. The heart for me was in “Good is for those absolved of sin / and well is for water.”

“How are you, Colleen?” A common question that most times we are not ready to answer.
