13: Your Turn
1. “Wait, Rising Sun is not the same as Winter Sun?” -Floyd homeboy Josh Copus
2. Last night I dreamt that Neil Young was my boyfriend.
3. Lately, I’ve been reading memoirs of the ’60s rock stars of my generation the way my veteran father read WWII books when he was my age. Here’s an excerpt from Patti Smith’s Just Kids, a winner of the National Book Award about living in the Chelsea Hotel with Robert Mapplethorpe when she and Robert were poor struggling artists during the 60s. The excerpt is about the ritual of getting ready to go to their favorite night club where Andy Warhol used to hold court: “Finally the moment would arrive to tackle the Shakespearean question: should he or should he not wear three necklaces? In the end, one was too subtle and two had no impact. So the second debate would be three or none? Sandy understood Robert was factoring an artistic equation. I knew that as well, but for me the question was to go or not go; in these elaborate decision-making processes, I had the attention of a hopped-up teenage boy.”
4. I relate to Smith’s attention span of a hopped up boy, as well her love of taking Polaroids, her infinity with Peter Pan and Daniel Boone, poetry, thrift shop treasure hunting and the “mild malaise” she fell into without knowing that she mentions in her newest book M Train.
5. Turn on, turn over, turn in, turn around, turn over a new leaf and THIS.
6. If the Beatles can misspell Beetle (naming their band after an insect like the Crickets but changing the spelling as a pun on musical beats), then I guess the Byrds felt free to change the spelling of Bird.
7. Years ago I suggested my friend Jane change the spelling of her name to Jayn. She’s been spelling it like that ever since.
8. One of the first things I bought when I started working after high school (1968) was a camera. After that it was a tambourine and then a canteen.
9. I think my Wednesday’s blog post would make a good name for a band: Jeeze Louise and the Deep Freeze. See HERE.
10. When I need a change of scenery, I drive around a 1-3 mile radius of my house and take pictures of abandoned houses, barns and mills. I used to be interested in the buildings, and then it was window and doors. Now I’m drawn to door knobs, key holes, old paint and knots in the wood.
11. Sometimes My Camera Does THIS for No Reason
12. After Jackson Browne performed with The Eagles on the Grammys Monday, I got a big bump in blog hits for THIS post.
13. Wow! Watch Van Gogh’s paintings come to life HERE.

And here I thought both Rising Sun and Winter Sun were movies.
#10 reminded my that my travel oriented mother is trying to collect pictures for a powerpoint presentation to share with people she meets around the world. It would show things from near her house to progressively father away.

#5 – Did you remember I read that piece “Book Of Ecclesiastes” at Kathy’s funeral. It basically says it all.
#12 – Did you see Jackson Browne sing with the Eagles. I am sorry I missed it.
#13 – WOW! That was totally real life. I enjoyed that.

I did think of that the Book of Ecclesiastes and I think the Byrds’ song is based on that. I watched the whole grammys. Too bad the sound got messed up on Adele’s song and it sounded bad. I liked Lady Ga Ga’s tribute to David Bowie. The Browne and Eagles song was in tribute to Eagles band mate Glen Fry who recently died.
Sherry, I bet you remember what I put in that canteen.

I always think of witty things to say as I read your 13s and by the time I get here I have forgotten them. Not a good sign at my stage of life.
Years ago, our daughter changed her name to CYndi.. I usually remember that. I wonder if a friend suggested it to her. I kinda like the psychedelic purple camera stripe… Mine keeps changing to video recording for no reason.
