Depending on Where You Were Sitting, it was Dick’s 81st Birthday or his 18th
He told me he was 71 and I was ready to believe him because he’s so young at heart.
The party was held at the Zion Lutheran Church where Dick was a minister for many years.
He’s a well-loved member of the Floyd community and was surrounded by loving attention.
There were sing-a-longs, a serenade and even drawing with crayons.
Our friend Chris Deerheart played the flute for a pink dogwood tree dedication to Dick’s community contributions. It will be planted on the church grounds.
Diane (Dick’s wife) read from All I Really Need To Know I Learned in Kindergarten.
Oh, and there was cake! And dancing!
My favorite picture of the day is this one of Dick meeting baby Pearl.
Happy Birthday, dear friend.

I would so hate to be the center of attention at 81. But if it is the only way I can last that long, I will do it!

Dick had a stroke last year and lives in a local nursing home. His birthday is on Earth Day. This is what his daughter commented when I posted these pictures on Facebook: Celebrating my dear father, Dick Giessler. 81 years well lived and loved. Post stroke, he continues to teach us – patience, acceptance, tolerance, understanding, …. “going with the flow”. The diversity of people attending his birthday celebration is a tribute to the many lives he has touched over the decades. This was my Earth Day celebration, and just perfect as he was the one who sparked and influenced my interest in solar power and recycling back in the early 70s and he has modeled Earth stewardship throughout his life.

Music and laughter feed the soul. What a lovely wonderful group of people to help celebrate a man who sounds like the best of the best!
