Not Jack Daniels
No, this is not a picture of Jack Daniels but it is of Jack and Daniel. Jack is the co-founder of The Little River Poetry Festival and Daniel (on the 4-wheeler) is the owner of Floyd’s On the Water Kayaking and Canoeing where the festival took place over the weekend. Look for a story about the Festival in an upcoming Floyd Press. In the meantime, listen to the poets tell it like it is in the clips below.
Jill said the poem was prompted by the little Syrian refugee boy who was photographed on the shore after drowning.
Tanya Cunningham tells it at the Little River Poetry Festival: …Ain’t no marches gone fix the hole in his head /so I wonder which part of my arm I would have to sever to feel complete again / Last summer, all my tongues tasted of blood / felt like endings too big for my mouth / couldn’t form the words I meant to say…
Dream Inventory is just one of the poems I read from my new chapbook, Packing a Suitcase for the Afterlife, published by Finishing Line Press.
Merlo is a poet and R.N. from Blacksburg. Her nursing work sometimes comes across in her poetry …I carry my good friend’s laundry / wood for the home fire / water for mopping / a tune …. I carry chants and prayers /the old cadence of mass / in my blood and bones / the drone of the heart sutra … I carry infirmed bodies to the toilet / to bed / in and out of wheelchairs / I carry massage tables / lemons / oil / music box…
Festival co-founder Jack Callan reads about a face-off between him and a herd of cows at night on Daniel’s family land in Floyd. / Our World Tuesday
