Not Just a Pretty Face
I want a poem I can live
happily ever after with
even if we fight
A poem that will talk to me
but one that won’t say
what it thinks I want to hear
I want a poem meant to be
that says what it means
and isn’t afraid to wear
its heart on its sleeve
I want a poem that takes chances
and breaks down my defenses
one that knows that actions
speak louder than words

That is the true mark of a poem. Thanks for sharing yours. It hits the spot nicely.

I can understand this situation. I too have had this sentiment. Nicely expressed.

Your last two lines capture the dilemma we all feel…

A poem that will talk to me
but one that won’t say
what it thinks I want to hear………
I agree totally, well penned piece of poetry

The best poems are like that. They guide me without showing or coercing.

I love it! Especially the poem that wont say what it thinks you want to hear!

Ah, the wisdom of those last couple of lines. A great write!

That’s how a poem should be!

Oh what a poem….and you have created this wonderful poem from your true self….and it speaks volumes.

OH!? I want such a poem too!? This is lovely! 😀

Ah – a poem that knows that actions speak louder than words would be a brilliant poem indeed.

This poem was so familiar to me like I read it before. If you just wrote it then it can’t be true. Sometimes things are like that. Lol! I’d like a poem like that too, Colleen!

Most excellent, as we have come to expect. Bravo1

Thanks Bill and all. Bekkie, the poem is a rewrite. I first posted it in 2008 in a very different form. I don’t think you could have read it back then when I wasn’t a member of Poets United or any online poetry community.

Poems that take chances are the very best!

Difficult to get a guy fitting that description. All goes to show that sincerity is a rare commodity. Well thought out, Colleen!

I could do with a poem like that, Colleen!

Colleen, how bold of your poem to take on traits of a trusted companion. Love it

I thought I commented on this earlier, CR, but…I guess not. I want that (those) poem(s), too!

Poetry is like a celebration of the essence, or distillation, of actions or observations. Well done, you!

Good, no, great shhtufffs.
I know a poet, whom in my opinion, writes poetry with such qualities. You know her also.
