The Salvador Dali Funhouse
I got disorientated after viewing all the surreal art with double images, optical illusions and symbolism at the Salvador Dali Museum in St. Petersburg, Florida.
With names like Exploding Raphaelesque Head, The Hallucinogenic Toreador, Portrait of My Dead Brother and The Disintegration of the Persistence of Memory, I’m not surprised that by the time we ordered some Spanish cuisine at the museum café, I was sure that the menu was printed upside down when it wasn’t.
This is where I make some poems with magnetic poetry and say to Joe, “I love not making sense,” and then a museum staff person comes and cleans up all my creations so that people can fill in the questions ‘art is’ and which I thought was very un-Dali-like.
This Dali was not a Lama, but he was a master, humorist and mystic who defied traditional art of his day.
Apparently, the art world back then liked the above painting until they realized that when they stepped back it was “The Pope’s” ear and not just an abstraction of dots of Raphael’s Sistine Madonna.
This “Lobster Phone” was created way before cellphones. I took the picture for my brother John, who is a fisherman.
After a beer at the café I was calling the artist “Sali.” I got lost in the garden labyrinth and had to turn around.
I sat on a bench with Dali’s iconic melting watch, wondered what time it really was and waited for Joe to come out.

They didn’t know they had a real live published poet in their presence…. they should have let you stay at that board all day.
