The First Annual Floyd Mayfaire
-The following first appeared in The Floyd Press on May 10, 2018.
About 30 vendors presented their artisan wares at the 1st annual Mayfaire Arts and Crafts festival, hosted by The Floyd Center for the Arts May 5th and 6th at the Center’s grounds. Along with arts and crafts, there was Maypole dancing, kid’s activities, artisan demonstrations, good eats, musical entertainment and more.
Heart of the Child Music Education director, Kari Kovick presented child-centered interactive songs and games.
Alea Lacoste (left) headed up a painting booth. Lacoste, who will graduate from Floyd High School this year, is trading community service volunteer hours for tuition at New River Community College under the ACCE program (Access to Community College Education). Lacoste is helping the Lahr family make art.
The Floyd Mystic Witches sold flower garlands, wands, calendars and baked goods to benefit the June Bug Center. They performed dances around the Maypole in their spring attire.
A group from Virginia Tech watches the dance entertainment. “We drove by and saw the tents so stopped,” said one of the students.

Shoppers check out the handcrafted jewelry at Almeta May’s “Appalachian Chick A Dee” booth.
CocoBoio was one of the bands that provided entertainment. The band consists of Stella Trudel (who writes and sings original songs) Chris Luster on bass and Bob Dillard on lead guitar.
Face-painter Deborah Harris worked out of her gypsy wagon. Here, Casey Jones is getting a black yin-yang painted on his face as “Grandma Jones” looks on.
SustainFloyd’s portable Solar Voltzwagon provided energy for band equipment. Grateful Bread served up hot sandwiches, rip and dip plates and fresh French fries.
Blacksmith and FCA teacher Brian Fritts demonstrated the forging of a wall hanging leaf hook. Fritts said he learned the craft from the late Manley Brown, a village blacksmith from Lexington.

“A good time was had by all” I’m sure.
As Fiona said…”what fun!” Especially for children, perhaps, but I’ll bet all those ladies in the last photo had a great time. I remember a group of us dressing up like that (minus the face paint) for a small town’s annual ball.
