Floyd Small Town Summer – First of the Season
-The following first appeared in The Floyd Press on June 7, 2018
The weather was perfect and the attendance was high at this year’s first Floyd Small Town Summer, a series of free events held throughout the summer at the Warren Lineberry Park. This year’s first of the season Thursday evening of family fun included free face painting, a giant inflatable, music performances and a movie showing of Wonder.
Amythyst Kiah, an alt-country blues singer/songwriter from Johnson City, TN, opened to a receptive crowd. Floyd’s own Music Road company – playing originals infused with funk, reggae, rock and afrobeat – brought dancers to the forefront.
Ice cream cones were a popular evening treat. Pesto pinwheels, all-beef hotdogs and popcorn were sold at the Plenty” booth, provided by The Floyd Country Store to benefit the local nonprofit which distributes food throughout the county and runs food sharing programs, including a fresh food pantry, portable produce and kids wonder gardens. Local eateries will be taking turns providing food for the town events, which are organized by country store owners Dylan Locke and Heather Krantz.
The next Small Town Summer event will take place on June 21, 6 – 10:30 and will feature Wayne Henderson, a National Heritage Award recipient honored for his craftsmanship as a luthier and his renowned finger-style Appalachian guitar playing. Helen White will be playing with Henderson and the Jeff Little Trio will also perform. The scheduled movie for the evening is Despicable Me 3.
