The Golden Years
The days of life scatter
like the goldfinch
on Woods Gap Road
The closer I get
the faster they go
like years escaped
from time constraints
with a fleeting beauty
that I can’t see up close
Rising from the roadsides
they leave me in their dust
They fly from my heart
like children who have grown
Like babies never born
they take their last chances
and fly like souls
freed from cages
into the next life

Yes I feel the same… I wonder if there are ways to slow it down a bit… maybe there is only one way… to enjoy each minute of this road.

This is beautiful. I feel the flurry of golden memories, and love the scattering like goldfinches on Woods Gap Road.

Oh–this goes straight to the heart.

Lovely. I love goldfinches. They do tend to rush by you like the years.

the closer I get, the faster they go.. I felt this but not with that magnificent goldfinch imagery…that will stay with me now!

Beautifully written but so sad. I suppose it is the phrase ‘unborn children’ that has such impact, sadness and tears associated with it.

A beautiful way to slow down those scattering days of life, Colleen! I don’t know Woods Gap Road but I can imagine the goldfinches and the dust by the roadside. I especially love the sense of regret in the lines:
‘They fly from my heart
like children who have grown
like children never born
whose memories won’t be known’.

Beautiful metaphor!

Days are down to about eight and a half minutes these days, eh?

Oh, this is something profound, in its metaphors and imagery. That opening line made me smile.
I really liked the flow of it and where it went, wading through a sea of tenderness and emotion. Very well phrased.

Yes, that is the way of life, it seems. Always moving forward…too fast. The last three lines are poignant.

Yes. Thank you.

this is absolutely remarkable – for the clearly painted scenes, and the beauty for the wonder, of the actual, as well as the deeper questions; you’ve certainly captured the nature of transience, of time fleeting, so very well here Colleen. I really like the spirit and energy here, in this piece.
