Backyard Burglars
The fat cats are squirrels
They scare away sparrows
Like fury Kongs
they hang in gangs
They swing from feeders
like pirate raiders
Slinging nuts and seed
like wild west thieves
Chasing off chickadees
like outlaws at the bar

The backyard sounds like a dangerous place!

I love birds, but also love the cheeky squirrels!

What a wonderful poem. The squirrels are like that. I don’t have any squirrels now, but I have had them in the past.

What a vivid, fun scene!

Had to laugh at the piratical squirrels 🙂

Colleen, I love your description of the mayhem that squirrels can bring to one’s backyard. Blue Jays can be just as bad, at the feeders and a lot noiser, too. Despite their beautiful blue and white plumage.

Ah, those squirrels know how to assert their authority. “Fat cats” indeed!

What a gang of bullies!!! Love them!

I loved this as it reminded me of one house we had and without pets the birds, reptiles and insects made themselves at home and would only disappear if we got too close to them but would help with the gardening and enjoy the flowers and try the fruit. Only the snakes and rats were discouraged!

Must be a nuisance, but I’d love to see the marauders nonetheless.

It’s a jungle out there!

Lots of similes in this poem. We don’t have many squirrels in this area due to hungry hawks but we have a ton of mischievous jays! A fun write.

Must be a sight to see indeed! Like a show right in your back yard. 🙂

What a violent lot!? love it!

This to me was so much more than a story of squirrel but more a metaphor of the true fat cats of society…

Ah, these burglars are quite something — they are quite an intimidating lot. I loved this allegory. These outlaws have totally intrigued me. Very well penned. 🙂

Such a fun read! Rhythmic couplets, each has a beauty of its own.
A very sweet representation 🙂
