Last Call
Same lunch
Same nap
Same birds
at the feeder
Squeaky rocker
in a drowsy noon
Poured tea
might as well be whiskey
Head drops
with the weight of thought
I wake with a gasp
and a stiff neck
The couch is a lifeboat
I manage to inflate
The poem is a fish story
that doesn’t hold water
It’s in over its head
and under the influence
but drowns out the deep blue
of a wasted afternoon

I love “The poem is a fish story that doesnt hold water. / It’s in over its head.” Love it! My couch is often a lifeboat too. Smiles. Carrying me away into movies of other lives.

Is any afternoon really wasted when you can write about it? 🙂

I love the couch being a lifeboat… lol. I enjoyed this.

Never a waste, really, just an aspect of the whole, a poet’s job, a state of mind/feelings to study and be honest about.

Such a beautiful and pensive poem, Colleen.

Sounds like you actually used the afternoon wisely, you must have needed the rest!

I like the idea that a couch is a lifeboat one manages to inflate. So often the couch turns into one, and one can spend (waste?) a lot of time looking at life from its comfortable safe space. But if a poem was written, it was not totally a waste. Smiles.

I see you are still on the the right side of the grass or snow up here in NH. 🙂

Oh, I’m not sure a doze in such pleasant surroundings counts as a wasted afternoon!

How we all must have done this, wasted an afternoon or the whole day not doing anything. Now that I am older I just don’t have enough time to do all the things I want to!

“The poem is a fish story/that doesn’t hold water”: Oh, that is quite so at times.
Still, it seems like a restful afternoon, which is to be cherished in its own light.

This describes a typical day for me too. (smiles)

Loving it again today. Smiles.

It cannot be wasted with a poem like this…
Sounds like a perfect couch.

Don’t know how I missed this one, CR. It’s a life savor.
