Phase Two in Which Doris Gets Her Gravy
It was the second Thanksgiving meal in the past couple of days. Amy suggested a chicken since dinner attendance would be small this year, but I agreed to roast a turkey (for the first time in over 30 years) because I wanted the gravy. Everything tastes better with gravy!
So, the gravy came out great, but the turkey roasting wasn’t without drama. For one thing, the 12-pound bird from Weathertop Farm was done an hour before I calculated it would be, and when I picked it up to reach the gravy fat, it broke into two parts. Then there was something about the temperature gadget that I borrowed from my friend Katherine melting in the bird.
It was old school at Jayn’s and Amy’s house, where the majority of Zephyr Farm gatherings used to be held. Josh is in town for 16 Hands. Dylan and Kerri are in New Orleans and the boys are with their mother. Joe is spending Thanksgiving with his mother in Bethany Beach and the rest of the Zephyr crew were out of town, celebrating with extended family.
We refrained from talking politics, after we did for a while, and Jayn’s mock mince pie with whipped cream was a hit, as was Perky’s purple potato pie, which was a tongue twister to say.
Pearl served me tea and ketchup before dinner. We reminisced down memory lane through old Zephyr Farm photo albums after dinner. At the dinner table Pearl said she was thankful for cherries, and Amy was thankful for Pearl.
