When Sleep Plays Hard to Get
From a promising first impression
to a string of false starts
It’s always a blind date
when sleep plays hard to get
When sleep is a flirt
that won’t commit
I toss and turn
and think too much
I watch the clock
for a second chance
that elusive slumber
that everyone wants
Until morning comes
and I finally succumb
to the seductive spell
of sleep’s amnesia
Now the tables turn
and I can’t wake up
It appears to the world
that I’ve overslept
when sleep plays hard to get

I regret to say I’ve recently come to know just what you’re talking about! You describe it perfectly.

Feeling this, today. You’ve caught the entire dance in this poem. 🙂

Sigh .. this is incredibly raw and palpable. I resonate with; “I watch the clock for a second chance that elusive slumber that everyone wants.”

I know insomnia in other ways… mainly waking up over and over during the night. Never really finding the rest that I crave, but it was a long time since I overslept.

Oh you have captured those nights so well.

Oh this makes me shiver as I overcame a long battle with chronic insomnia not too very long ago. I so feel your pain, Colleen, and you have captured it perfectly.

Being a victim to chronic insomnia for years, I totally understand. Except I rarely oversleep.

It only appears that I have overslept because I only fell asleep in the morning!

Creative way to describe sleep (or the lack thereof!)

ha – Sleep does play hard to get and unfortunately it usually gives up chase when I have to get up for work.

What is this “sleep”, of which you speak?
November 24th, 2019 6:45 pm
Yup–for years that has been my life–so I really relate!

I have been having nights like this for the last week or so. Luckily being retired I don’t have to panic in the morning about getting up or going to work but take my time doing everything in slow motion!

It’s good to know I’m not alone.
