Dude, Who’s Your Muse?
Maybe I went to see her because she was right here in my town or because I read this about her on Wikipedia: Rachel Baiman is the co-founder of Folk Fights Back, a musician-led national organization that puts together benefit concerts and awareness events in response to the Trump administration.
But I really saw her because my friend Mark Hodges sent me a Facebook invite, and then my friend Melody sent me another one a couple of minutes later, so I googled some videos of Baiman and was SOLD!
It wasn’t a sold-out on a cold Thursday night show at the Floyd Country Store, but those of us who made it were glad we did. It was a performance of top notch songwriting, singing and musicianship from Baiman and her opening act Mike Wheeler. This (above) was one of my favorite songs (a new album not out yet) to her younger sister who is moving to Colorado.
It was a Nashville crew, but they didn’t know our girl Morgan Wade, who just moved from Floyd to Nashville and is making a name for herself as a songwriter. Mike Wheeler played an opening set and was part of the Baiman quartet, along with the bassist. Wheeler played mostly original songs. Just listen to the sounds he can get out of his acoustic guitar (sorry I didn’t get a longer version of this song). He plugged in a lead guitar at one point too.
Rachel, a multi-instrumentalist, has a song and album called Shame and I have a poem called Shame, which she said I could message her. The last thing I said to her was ‘come back!’
Dude, who’s your muse? That was some lyrics to one of the songs the trio did. _______Colleen Redman
