The Writer’s Yoga Pose
I sit in silence
hands poised on keys
with no set routine to guide me
waiting for the click of imagination
to move through fingertips
looking with squinted eyes
for what isn’t seen or spoken
I stretch the range of combinations
to see what can be opened
to break the pose
to hold the balance
to inhale and exhale
the practice of poems
With focused attention
the words take positions
because when gurus are muses
writers compose

I love this, and especially that last line. Beautiful.

Well….being a love of both yoga and writing poetry, I love this post! Have you heard of “pretzel yoga” ? That’s when the teacher in a yoga class does impossible poses that wrap their legs around their heads, balance on one foot while one arm is reaching around your back to the ceiling etc etc etc!!! 🙂 Maybe that’s when we poets get a writer’s block? 🙂

Love this!

Oh I love this Colleen, especially:
‘With focused attention
the words take positions
because when gurus are muses
writers compose’

Comparing yoga to writing practice is clever and is a very apt comparison.

Lovely writing.

A poem about thinking about writing a poem; clever. The yoga analogy words well too. God, I haven’t done any yoga for 40 years.

I’ve done my share of yoga and meditation and the comparison to writing is appropriate I think. It all takes mindfulness. I like your perspective!

You describe it very well. I have been there many times waiting for my fingers to feel the inspiration yet to come. Great poem.

Nice lines: “waiting for the click of imagination
to move through fingertips”

I am in that pose every morning and you wrote it so perfectly, it is a yoga pose, I get cramps if that muse does not turn up soon enough, loved this so much!

Yup, that is me, too.

Ha, that’s one kind of yoga pose I can manage!

Oh yes, we all love that pose don’t we? 😉

A familiar pose, save for the fact that I often forget the breathing and patience and opt for spinning around in the chair.

looking with squinted eyes

That’s what poetry and storytelling is all about. To me writing is about a quarter of it. Great write.

I have been absent from restorative yoga for way too long … thank you for the beautiful reminder.
