As Good as Your Word
Take the cover off
the dull buzz of words
held captive in jars
with no breathing holes
Bury their carcasses
Let them grow back green
Set free the drone of repetition
Don’t degrade the living with lie
Don’t lose the chance
to turn language into verse
to pollinate the truth
into flower chain conversations
When whole colonies
are collapsing
we must risk being stung
We must put into words
what only we can say

I think this is our only chance for survival. We have to give it the words.

All will be well as long as we don’t lose our voice(s), and their hearing isn’t destroyed by the din of mindlessness, blather, and lies.
Fine work, CR.

I would write this on the blackboard for the poetry class I’m not teaching.

Not really sure why, but this brings a slight hitch to the voice. Maybe it’s the encouragement to honesty? Being raised in a place that values quiet go along/get along voices, words absolutely carry a sting.

And poets do of course. Hopefully one day in the future people reading our work will agree and acknowledge our work and see the world with our eyes.

That final stanza says it all and then some. And these lines: “Don’t lose the chance / to turn language into verse” are the best advice I’ve heard in a while. We should never wast the chance to turn living into art.

An incredibly poignant write, Colleen. I resonate with; “Don’t degrade the living with lie.”?

Freedom of speech is quickly being eroded under the guise of woke and PC. Yes – we should speak out even if stung by our actions. We need to be heard!
