We Followed a Butterfly
We followed a butterfly down the trail at the I.C. DeHart Memorial Park in Woolwine that Joe discovered while mountain biking with a friend (just 8 miles from our house).
It was weekend two of hiking our way through the social distancing of COVID-19 looking for wildflowers.
Joe explained that the single track for mountain bikes, horses and people was cut by Eric O’Connell, a Patrick County State Trooper that our son Josh went to school with. O’Connell, an avid bike rider, and work crews from the local jail cleared over 16 miles of trails at the park.
Our jackets were the color of the periwinkle flowers that we saw at the start of the hike, and the loop was a haven for wild redbud and dogwood trees.
My favorite spot was by the single azalea we found that was blooming next to some small waterfalls.
Our swallowtail friend liked that spot too.
Joe is a bookworm even when he hikes.
The trail was no competition for the Rock Castle Gorge hike we took the weekend before, as far as wildflowers go.
We didn’t see another soul during the approximately 2-mile hike, but we did see some signs that people had been there.
We’ll be back when the water level is higher to check out the waterfalls.

Looks like a great hike!
I don’t really like the dog skeleton though!

Those are great butterfly perspectives, especially with the azalea. Heinlein said, “Butterflies are self-propelled flowers.” I think he’s right.
