When Gorge Stands for Gorgeous and Columbine is Divine
Joe and I have been hiking for wildflowers along the Rock Castle Gorge loop in Floyd and Patrick County throughout the Coronavirus stay-at-home order. Just when I think that one of our wildflower hikes can’t be topped, we do another one and it is.
For this hike, along the Rocky Knob section of the Rock Castle Gorge trail, the highlight was coming upon a goldmine of columbine.
It was my first time seeing wild columbine and I was like a kid in a candy store. Last week it was Virginia bluebells that I was excited about and this week, it was all about the columbine.
Joe is the true hiker and has been taking longer hikes on his own. He knew right where to find them. I call him my scout. He starting calling me “mountain goat” after watching me scramble and climb for the best wildflower shots.
Trillium makes me want to go to a prom. The Appalachian Mountains are known for them.
I told Joe someone should walk down the aisle and get married here. We found this pathway lined with white violets in the lowest part of the loop, in Patrick County. Joe was there two days before and they weren’t in bloom then.
Joe really knows how to hang out.
And here is the wedding bouquet, bluets!
And don’t forget the fire pinks if you want to add a little red.

I felt the air, and the beauty of flowers. Nothing much growing here yet, snows last week and last year it snowed in June. We moved from MD to CO and nature is different here. Thanks for sharing your walk with us
