Sometimes Pandemic Hiking is a Family Affair
Our grandson Liam (9) wanted to see the house we described to him in the Rock Castle Gorge from when families still lived there. He had the idea of sleeping in the abandoned house as a challenge but settled for looking in the windows.
Known as the Austin Connor house, it was built in 1916 along the Rock Castle Gorge creek and was not the first home on that site. It’s the only standing house left in the Gorge, the only property that was not purchased during the Blue Ridge Parkway acquisition.
Liam also took on the challenge of crossing the rushing creek on the 2 mile (each way) hike.
Even though there was a bridge and a diverted trail alongside the creek, which I gladly took.
Bryce (12) liked to scout ahead.
We saw millipedes, a ringneck snake, a few colonies of firepink wildflowers and passed the primitive campground where Liam and his Hopa have camped before. There was some partial swimming and rock stacking in the creek and Liam really liked using his camel pack.
Later at home, Liam got some eggs from the hen house and we had a bacon and egg supper. It was a good day! / Our World Tuesday
