Look Away
A poem is like the sun
that you can only take in doses
that you can’t look at directly
or force to shine
It’s a gold star charm
A bright idea to follow
Flashing rainbows
and casting shadows
as its good luck
comes and goes

Like us poems have a chance at success so long as in it’s heart it is sincere and kind.

I remember a childhood friend. I would gawk at her while she looked at the sun directly. I used to wonder what was wrong with me – I didn’t have her superpower. Glad now with a poem, I am in good company.

We read and see poems differently and I love how you have expressed that in your poem, Colleen, especially in the lines:
‘A bright idea to follow
Flashing rainbows
and casting shadows’.

I love the idea of a poem as a charm!

Best way of looking at a poem, ever. I wonder what this would say about novels in verse. A story that grows in the mind as the eyes reads, perhaps.

Poems do have the ability to transport us to other worlds, to pick us up….and sometimes to take us down!

Pretty much every poem I write …. ‘can’t look at directly or force to shine.’ Cheers.

A rainbow display and casting shadows? An interesting thought. Hmmm…

Awesome way to look at a poem. I so love how each reader has their own view of a poem. Your ending speaks volumes.
