This Ain’t No Walk to the Mailbox
My mailbox is about 200 yards from our house. This was a steep mile up to Buffalo Mountain, the highest point of Floyd County.
There were lots of places to stop and sit on the way up.
A root mandala.
We made it!
I call this “the hood ornament.”
And this is a natural bonsai oak tree, stunted from the mountain-high elements at 3,971 feet.
Layered clothing came off and on again. Hoods went up once we reached the windy summit, where we enjoyed the panoramic views and watched a flock of about 20 turkey vultures ride the warm air thermals, swooping, gliding, ascending and diving.

Your views at the top are gorgeous! Hiking up a mountain and getting to its summit is always such a sense of accomplishment! I have done it a few times –with lots of rest stops in between–and have such wonderful memories of the feat.

Wow, what a hike. What a view you had.
I went on a hike today in some lowlands and they had lots of blown over trees from a tornado in 2016. Now I know what to call the base of the trees: Root Mandalas. I love it.

Really liked the “hood ornament” pose and was right there with you sitting on top of the world!
