Time Will Tell
Time doesn’t argue
It doesn’t stand still
Slowly it rages
or politely appeases
It saves itself for a rainy day
It ticks and slips
and wakes lucid in dreams
It’s on our side, they say
Time doesn’t heal
It only hurts slightly
It drips like a slow leak
but pours in the end
Time wears a path
that erodes all our secrets
It doesn’t play favorites
and never admits
its faults

I’m particularly struck by the line ‘It doesn’t play favourites’. True, so impersonal.

In order to survive we have used time to plan our lives. We think as 21st century folk that we are in charge but we are still subject to the will and actiions of nature to exist.

I’ve learnt a lot about time since I retired – can’t believe that was over six years ago – and love the thought that it ‘saves itself for a rainy day’ as it’s very wet here today.

“It’s on our side, they say…”
Yeah, well, “they say” lots of things, but…
Nice write, CR

I could feel this rasping by, that constant slight sanding.

I love that the last line of the second stanza seems to be rolling its eyes. And how the closing makes it quite clear that the speaker is not all that impressed with time’s behavior.
And I adore the title.

Time is indeed a stern taskmaster. The next to last stanza describes it precisely!

Nice. “Time doesn’t argue.” No, time always gets its way, no sense fighting it.

A poem about time chock full of truisms ~~~ enjoyed it thoroughly.

Love it! Some intriguing reflections on time that give pause … which, of course, people can do – but time cannot not ~ smiles ~
