Just When I Think I Have No More Poems to Write
When poetry becomes dictation
it’s like having an imaginary friend
that no one (but you) believes in
and no one wants to meet
When poetry becomes a distraction
it’s like holding your ear to the moon
and listening for the ocean
where everyone knows
the sky should be

Lovely! Long may our poetry keep on becoming.

Oh yes, poetry is an imaginary friend, Colleen! I love the idea of holding my ear to the moon and listening for the ocean.

Poetry clearly obsesses us as nothing is so good as being able to write and have readers be taken into your world and be fascinated by it.,

“…and no one wants to meet”…
Ain’t THAT the truth! More and more frequently, I catch even My Beloved Sandra’s eye roll when I say, ‘Hey listen to this.”

you have just nailed it, about poetry and its distraction. 🙂

I’m secretly happy that poetry is “an imaginary friend that no one wants to meet” even if I sometimes feel Poetry itself does not want to meet me. (lol)

I love the imaginary friend no one wants to meet! And, if we keep wanting to introduce them, they soon avoid us!
I wonder… since the moon effects the ocean tides, perhaps we should hear the ocean listening to the moon! It’s a wonderful image.

When poetry becomes itself,
imaginary friends just show up
singing moon oceans real.
All right, not nearly as awesome as yours, but I loved it so much that I had to give it a go.
Love this.

Distraction? OH YES. There are days and nights it can actually consume me … not entirely healthy. LOL I love the thought process here … and your poem!

What “everyone knows” is not always true…

There are nights words distract me endlessly. I’ve taken to dictating myself an e-mail to send them on their way and free my mind for sleep!

I am in favor of a good distraction, though it’s nice to visit those imaginary friends from time to time, if just to hear what they sound like.
