The Magic Trick
It takes years of prep
for the magic trick
of being here one minute
and gone the next
Death is as strange
as being sawed in half
One day your parachute won’t open
Or your knees and shoulders won’t work
and on the way down you’ll ask
Who was it for?
What was it worth?
Was it believable?

Nature’s Vanishing Act.
Questions are pointless. Go with the flow.
Ain’t no magic about it, I think.
Nice work, CR.

Hmmm, questions I’m beginning to contemplate asking myself!

I must confess that bits of me are reluctant to get older but I find that chocolate does tempt me into staying longer.

This is so true, Colleen. As much as we prepare ourselves, it’s others who are surprised and shocked when we are gone. I’ve seen that this week with the death of Prince Philip. We all knew he as old, almost a century, and that he had been unwell, but it was still a shock when it was announced on the radio.

What’s strange about death is it’s something we deal with differently even though it’s as normal as life.

As ever a penetrating and powerful piece, written with an original voice, which sings true… I especially liked the of: “Death is as strange as…’ Very effective…

oh wow, so many permutations that could go wrong. but yes, was the time here worth it? 🙂
great poem!

So many questions that will never get answered. I enjoyed this poem.

Death is a strange mistress, indeed. I wonder, if when the time comes, she will answer all our questions. Or, perhaps, I don’t really wonder… but just hope.

Your poetry is amazing … makes me ponder ‘stuff.’ Happy Sunday.

“What was it for?” is the question I ask all the time. I have no answers. Do you?

Love all the questions at the end. Worth pondering about while we are still alive.

My thoughts had turned to death this week as well, and your questions have come to mind.

It’s a confounding trick. I have to remind myself sometimes that certain folk are gone — and that I too have a limited time to live out some good stories to tell them when I learn that last trick too.

Death is at least as big a magic trick as being born in the first place!
April 12th, 2021 8:42 am
Your words make me wonder … why are such questions often not asked until there is no turning back?
April 15th, 2021 5:18 pm
WOW. This is so good – to put it mildly. I love this comparison, Colleen.

David

It’s the one magic trick we’ll all have to master at one point or another. Why not make it the Greatest Show on Earth?
Nicely writ! J

“Death is as strange as being sawed in half,”.. yes now that you mention, it really does feel like that. A deeply poignant write.

I think we are never going to be prepared… and yet it will come for us all.
