Ray, Why Would You Do That?
Ray Wylie Hubbard plays Good Old Country Blues at the Epperly Mill in Floyd VA. Here, he explains how and why he named one of his albums “A: Enlightenment B: Endarkenment (Hint: There is No C).” His answer is great and the clip is a good example of his songwriting, his storytelling and his and the band’s showmanship. That’s his son Lucas on lead guitar and Kyle Snyder on drums.
Ray called Adam (Epperly Mill co-owner, Two Trees caterer and performing musician) up on the stage for Bad Trick, a song from Ray’s latest album “Co-Starring” that has guest performances by Ringo Starr, Black Crowes singer Chris Robinson, Eagles member Joe Walsh and bassist Don Was on it.
We had a lot of fun! Ray’s “Up Against the Wall, Redneck Mother” is the Honky Tonk anthem sing-along that became famous when Jerry Jeff Walker covered it and put Ray on the Raydar in the ‘70s. I almost missed taping it because I was dancing, but not to worry, I did zoom in. I’m working on a story for next week’s Floyd Press. Stay tuned…
