Dreams are From Mars and Poems are From Venus
A poem is a dream
that’s willed into being
A dream just shows up
and writes itself
When dreams are absent
a poem can be imagined
When pens are inkless
a dream spells it out
Both emerge
from the subconscious
A poem takes some coaxing
A dream is unsigned
They both break barriers
revealing the unspoken
unlocking the inner sanctum
with metaphoric keys

Busy dreamnight, last night, for me, CR. Morning at the keyboard. Thanks

May the unspoken be revealed and the inner sanctum be unlocked! It’s the inner sanctum that surprises even me!

i like the way you bring out the differences between a dream and a poem.
so if one has a poem that ‘writes itself’, there must be a dream somewhere. 🙂

I love this dance between dreams and poetry–the way they are described here made me wonder if vivid dreaming then would be a poem we write in our heads and live with our eyes closed.

Bravo! Your piece is insightful. I’ve never thought of the relationship or difference between dreams and poems as you’ve clearly demonstrated.

I have definitely had some dreams where it helped to have a poet’s mind to parse it’s meaning. I wonder how confusing it must be to not have that perspective sometimes.

So true! So many of my poems come from somewhere else–I think I just channel them–but dreams–mine are vivid and often scary

CHEERS! To poems … and dreams!

I really like this. I was having vivid dreams last night–and writing poems in some of them, which unfortunately I can’t remember now!

A gorgeous poem, Colleen! I love how you’ve described it; you remind us that it is a magical process. The personification of the first stanza is an absolute delight:
“A poem is a dream
that’s willed into being
A dream just shows up
and writes itself.”

This is a wonderful poem. I love how you delve into where poems originate! This was a great opening line…
A poem is a dream
that’s willed into being

I like how you link poems and dreams, showing how they mesh and how they’re different. Definitely food for thought. Hadn’t linked them before.

I do think that some of my dreams pour into my poetry, but also the poetry enters my dreams.
