The Black Journal
The words are buried
in the Dollar Store journal
where grief and relief exist together
Where salt and sugar
both have their place
Where hurt deeply felt
has less of a hold
and is not a theory
but a theme that is lived
Where meaninglessness passes
like an overcast morning
Where another back door
is gratefully left open
to enter through
or escape

Salt and sugar, sweet and sour, that’s life!

This one particularly short and sweet Collen and especially strong methinks…
“The words are buried

That is great, bold and confident poetry for sure. Your words have real authority here… A sign of a writer truly maturing… Bravo!

I love the idea that grief and relief exist or are found in the same place. Beautiful piece ❤️

Journals are places of wonder and enchantment, danger and despair. It’s all there for the taking—or leaving.

the last stanza is the perfect ending to your poem.
everyone should keep a journal, a back door “left open to enter through or escape”.

Such is the power of writing in a journal. It’s amazing how our powerful our words can be.

I almost never use a cell phone so most of what other people do on their phones I do in my dollar store calendar. The upside is that I can find information a lot more quickly than people who use their phones. If I have an interesting thought, it goes in the calendar along with the mundane tasks.

Committing anger and grief to the Dollar Store journal is no doubt cathartic….and provides fodder for thoughtful poems when revisited at some future date! Your poems are always so relevant and readable.

I know in my journal grief and relief (joy?) get all mixed up. I love the idea of a journal as a means of escape.

I do love a place where all things and feels belong, in some way or another.

“Meaninglessness passes like an overcast morning.” What a great comparison, and a hopeful one.

Colleen, this poem is pure delight … so many wonderfully creative thoughts/lines … I no longer keep a daily journal but often find myself jotting ‘important’ stuff on a few notepads scattered about.

I love this. A lot of truth in it.
