The Place Where I Asked, “Did We Die and Go to Heaven?
Most beaches along the east coast don’t have sunsets on the ocean.
But because Atlantic Beach, NC, is a barrier island that cuts into the mainland, it is southfacing and you can watch sunsets from the beach.

I literally said, “We may as well have died and gone to heaven,” when we arrived Thursday night and were transported to someplace entirely new, a paradise where the sky turned upside down, the clouds hung over a sandbar of light, the horizon spread into eternity and the lava of fiery light spilled and flooded the beach.

Every night is a new show.

And every day there are new cloud angels floating by.
.

Because our heaven is a south facing island inlet, the ocean water is warm and without the huge breakers that are hard to get beyond without getting dunked or thrown when you go for a swim. I swam for over an hour because the warm ocean brought the Hull Bay girl out in me.

At home we like to birdwatch from the porch. Here, we watched fish ride the waves in schools and mullets jump far out of the water. The seagulls played tag and the pelicans flew in formation and swooped down like Top Guns.

I posted a picture of Joe on Facebook that said ‘Joe’s on the phone buying a camper cause I wouldn’t let him buy a condo” that got over 90 likes so far and more than a dozen comments.

Joe got a lot of reading done. Me not so much, because reading always leads to writing.

There was a hot tub and pool, a beer called Mountain Candy a crab stuffed mahi mahi, yoga and shelling on the beach. Maybe today we’ll build a sandcastle.

This was our third year staying at Atlantic Beach. and it won’t be the last.

Beautiful sunset.
Isn’t it great to catch a sunset on the east coast? We once got to see both the sunrise and sunset from a beach on the west coast. What a treat! 🙂
