A Poem That Looks Good for its Age
I like to rhyme
but not on cue
I like a relationship of lyrics
that are interchangeable
And poems like make-up
that no one knows you’re wearing
Aged like wine and honey
poured from the psyche
I like stand-out stanzas
that hold up without a prop
and words that show up
where you least expect them
Distilled to an essence
and faithful to the eternal
I like poems of choice and change
that embody the inevitable
Poems with revealing verse
that you’ll want to revisit
and lines with punches
that don’t leave black eyes
I like assonance and alliteration
and puns without punctuation
I like internal rhymes
that slant and surprise
that don’t end up
at the end of every line

but not on cue
I like to do
what I’m not told to”

Oh, Colleen, this was such a delight to read! You are a master at the art of clever, contagious, and fun poetry. I enjoyed unobtrusiveness of the imagery, the welcome punches, and the wild rhyme that fits just right. A delight, indeed!

With a really good poem it flows so naturally that one sometimes forgets whether it rhymes or not.

I love the assertiveness in this whimsical piece. It knows the rules, but like a master knows when to break them to get the best effect.

After reading this, one might almost think you were a rebellious writer!

“words that show up”
I’ve heard the phrase “show up” in the corporate world that it’s almost a cliche but your words here actually mean something
