In Answer to Katherine’s Year of Haiku
I
The moon likes to shine
from different angles
It changes its pose
and each one is whole
Not one thing
I say one and move on
like the moon across the sky
I orbit round and back again
Always changed
but the same
II
Don’t tell me the moon
is always full
I can see with my own eyes
But half-truths are tricks
and truth can’t be fixed
I’m glad I can admit
when I’m fooled
III
Life etches itself
like tattoos I can’t hide
Truth is hard enough
Lies are insult to injury
Time’s sea level is rising
I’m preparing to drown
I’m preparing to love water
and to hold my breath
Life etches itself
where love collects

I don’t know the writing you’re responding to, but I don’t need to in order to enjoy this deeply thoughtful poem. The closing couplet is a beautiful culmination.

Many great lines like
‘I orbit round and back again
Always changed
but the same’
and
‘Life etches itself
where love collects’

Stunning….what lines….the tattoo etched…preparing to drown…the moon full, from all angles. I really loved this.

So many wonderful lines.
This stood out to me:
“Time’s sea level is rising
I’m preparing to drown
I’m preparing to love water
and to hold my breath”

Amazing lines in this, like this one “like the moon across the sky
I orbit round and back again
Always changed
but the same”
Your answer to Katherine is wonderful.

I love the way the moon and truth are interweaved with our perceptions. Very beautifully worded.

This is a beautiful collection of poems, specially the last one about life.

Very well written! Truth is still truth no matter how we try to change it!

A very astute and timely poem. Half-truths are tricks, indeed, and currently a national disease.

The last two lines are lovely… the moon is a forever inspiration, thank goodness!

I love this : “Life etches itself
like tattoos I can’t hide”
The mystique of the moon deepens. 🙂

Indeed we probably have to learn to love the sea… I read this on the day of the new moon so it makes sense not just write about the full moon

I’m glad I can swim and float in not so kind water. 🙂

“I’m glad I can admit / when I’m fooled” – could not agree more 🙂
