Setting Sail
The pioneers have left
for the uncharted New World
They fell off the horizon
when the world was flat
When I was 3rd of nine
in an unbroken family line
before survival was optional
and paradise was a gamble
we had already won
We navigated destiny
with safety in numbers
with a lifetime of chances
and luck that runs out
Now I’m 1st of six
unanchored from my sidekicks
The children are orphans
marooned from the mainland
and I am an Island
waiting for a ship

Ah, the reflections that arise as we age! Poignant.

This is gorgeous, Colleen … and thought provoking.

I really like the way you used the ship imagery. When we are young, we tend to think of the people and things around us as solid and unmoving. It is only when we are older that we realize that we are all floating on our own journeys, and that sometimes the ships we thought would always sail along side us must take their own course.

Safety in numbers, indeed… I wonder if the ship will come… I wonder if everyone will get her ow boat.

“I am an island waiting for a ship” is such a relatable line and clear visual that many in our world feel.

May it be a long wait.

I love your use of a ship. Islands become less populated with the years.
