When No One Cries Wolf
The wolf doesn’t need sheep’s clothing
if the door is left open
if the bad apples are poison
and the fences are broken
if the good people are sleeping
and the rest are herded
the pack is emboldened
and the vulnerable forsaken
Cry wolf every time
Don’t follow the dishonorable
Don’t fall from grace
or fall prey to lies
Don’t pull the wool
over your own eyes

Wise words! Which no doubt have wide application, though I haven’t missed the current implications, either.
This is beautifully said, Colleen, and the last two lines in particular are so important.

True.. which is pretty much evident, wolves are on the move as the herd fools itself into a sense of safety.

“Don’t pull the wool
over your own eyes” It is painful to look life eye to eye, but it is also dangerous not to. Very well said, Colleen.

Thought provoking… know the truth…much healthier to do so in the long run but often hard to face

In a world where misinformation, fake news and lies are covering up the truth, the poem is a timely reminder for all to be careful.

The thing with bad apples is that everyone forget the whole saying. The bad apple ruins the bunch, so they need to be chucked not protected or kept where they are. They are poison, just as you say. It enrages me that people never seem to want to deal with that part.

how powerful… considering how many people are allowing the wolf to devour our democracy.

Agree! A challenge when we cannot discern truth from lies.

Perfect ending on this, Colleen.
