Still Grateful
The miracle was that Joe’s brother Mike got us 4 box seat passes. We had bought one extra ticket that we sold in the parking lot.
I hadn’t been to a Dead Show since Jerry died in 1995 but some things don’t change all that much.
Back then, I worked the parking lot selling wrapped crystals and put a down payment on our house with the earnings from that job.
Not being much of a sports person, this is my idea of being a box-seat fan. We had push button bar service!
This Dead incarnation is Dead & Company with John Mayer on lead guitar and Bobby Weir and drum wizard Mickey Hart as the only originals.
We missed the first set but they opened the second one with Sugaree and we didn’t waste any time dancing. Check out Joe’s brother Stevie’s shirt near the end of this clip.
It about broke my heart when Bobby sang Stella Blue and Mayer sang Black Muddy River, two of Jerry’s sweet signature songs. Terrapin Station (one of Joe’s favorite) had us dancing in the aisles with the spinners. Watch a clip HERE.
We’ve come a long way since working in the parking lot and hoping for a miracle when we couldn’t afford a ticket, but those years were formative and magical and once a Dead Head always a Dead Head. Thanks Mikey!

Wow! I never knew John Mayer joined the Grateful Dead! He looks as handsome as ever! I really like him. Do you remember I named my bird/ parakeet “Sugary” after that song?! One guitarist looks similar to Sam Elliot – wild ! Love that you got boxed seats and even better, Joe’s bro!
