13: If the Shoe Fits
1. I want to know why one of my hens is laying eggs with purple speckles on the shells and why the blue twitter bird on twitter was replaced with a dog’s face for weeks.
2. The birds tweet and trill as if coaxing buds open. Wind roars like the surf of my childhood peninsula, scattering songs to praise new blooms. What an alarm to wake up to!
3. My latest crush is a catbird, plain to look at but wonderful to hear. It purrs and mews as blackbirds crow. Juncos hop like children at recess. Finches flinch when they see me and sparrows pretend not to know.
4. Rash or rush?
5. These days my Facebook algorithm sends me lots of articles on psychology and ads for anti-wrinkle creams.
6. My wardrobe will be complete / when I reach the end of life / with the right style for any season / for wherever I’ll be going
7. My hobby of thrift shopping, my love of clothes and necessity for constant alterations comes up as metaphors in lots of my poems. Like this: The sunlight is bright / I can see to thread the needle / Always moving buttons over / to make something fit … I don’t make something new / but make do with what is / I sew backwards to go forward and feel every prick…
8. Or The Fall Collection: I shop for words / as though the dictionary was a catalog / of women’s clothes or shoes / As though the folded over corners / of favorite words on pages / were the edited alliterations / of hemmed skirts / Browsing for the uncommon / I pin down a suitable meaning / unfold a matching pattern / for a custom-made fit / And if I was a model / and my signature was a label / I’d be zipping down a runway / wearing poetry on my sleeve.
9. Ruby red slippers or Cinderella’s glass slipper?
10. We’re going to miss the magic of Floydfest this July after going to every festival since it started in 2002. Our friends/and organizers had to cancel this year because of challenges with the new festival site.
11. “The county said that while they are disappointed by the news, they are pleased to see this organization’s commitment to their Floyd County location going forward. “The free enterprise mindset of Floyd makes it a great match for FloydFest” stated Board of Supervisors Chairman Joe Turman. “With the opportunities, it creates for business and economic development, we are pleased that the FloydFest folks have decided to make our community their home and are grateful for what they are doing for our local economy and tax base.” – More from Wfxr-tv, Fox station for Roanoke, Lynchburg and the New River Valley HERE.
12. Rated #2 of the 10 Best Musical Festivals Across the US by USA Today and described as “Floyd, a must-see stop on The Crooked Road, Virginia’s Heritage Music Trail, offers this wonderful American Roots music fest annually in the Blue Ridge Mountains,” the festival will be back in 2024…
13. Cinderella’s Lost Lady Slipper: If the shoe fits, wear it. If the song lifts, hear it. Don’t wait till midnight.

I was surprised they couldn’t find another venue for Floydfest. The dog on Twitter had something to do with Elon Musk, of course. Something about a cryptocurrency called Dogecoin that he endorsed.
