Once Upon a Time
-For Joe
I walked through my school days
with my eyes open
waiting for the spell
of sleep to be broken
When Snow White
was left out in the cold
and everyone thought
the emperor wore clothes
I left the breadcrumbs
I ate the apple
I kissed the frog
and sewed a shadow
without pricking my finger
When I was the night girl
and you were the sun boy
we made straw into gold
and sowed a magic bean
We waited for a boat story
and a fairy godmother moon
until the nightingale
returned to the forest
until all the best secrets came true

Love this!! Even if you “left the breadcrumbs and ate the apple” “all the best secrets came true in the end” I love fairy tales with a happy ending

Fairy tales or harsh realities, moment magical and not so much, days are lighter when there is a “we” to share them with, in your case, brother Joe. 🙂

O Colleen!! This sounds like a fairy tail romance, the kind we’d all wish for.

This is beautiful. I love the fairy tale weaving, the sweet tone, the feeling that things went well in the end… Joe is lucky.

I love this, especially:
When I was the night girl
and you were the sun boy
we made straw into gold
and sowed a magic bean
— reminds me of meeting my Cheeseseller….

Every person reading your (amazing) poem is going to relate in one way or another. I have read it multiple times now, and have traveled way, way back to those days. I thank you for this poem.
