Wow! My daughter-in-law gifted me with an early Christmas present, a coveted ticket for Floyd’s own Morgan Wade who was playing a set at the Floyd Country Store.

I had tried to get tickets, but they quickly sold out. I was resigned to watch the live stream on the Floyd Country Store TV when I got the call and happily joined the ticket- holder line where the excitement built.

This is where Kyle Richards, Morgan’s friend/collaborator from The Beverly Hills Housewives, runs across the street and I missed getting a picture.  I think Richards is involved in doing a documentary on Morgan.

Country Store co-owner Dylan Locke spoke about how Morgan speaks well of her hometown community and knows how to give back. Her concert was a fundraiser for the Floyd and Patrick County firefighters who gallantly fought off the recent Tuggles Gap wildfire, which happened to be about a mile from my house. Morgan also spent time with the Country Store’s Handmade Music School students, who played for her.

Not only that, but she was just getting back on her feet and back on stage after undergoing double mastectomy and reconstruction surgery for breast cancer (which she had a gene for).  She spoke about growing up in Floyd County and wanting to get out because there was nothing to do here. “Then you travel everywhere and all you want to do it come back,” said the Floyd County native.

She played a couple of new songs, or ones that I had never heard, and spoke about a new pared down record that she and her guitar player recorded with 10 new songs before her surgery.

Here’s an older favorite.

She closed the set with a hit from her Reckless record after telling the crowd that she was going to go hang out with her grandma and eat dinner. “I’m very excited about that,” she said.
