"A blog is to a writer what a canvas is to an artist." ~ Colleen Redman

The Enticement

Happy is a carrot on a stick
An idealistic flip of a switch

It’s child’s play
A coin toss wager
A joker in a deck

Happiness is what you make it
An easy fix that’s worth it

It’s a promise you can’t keep
that’s closer than you think

It’s never the ever after
It’s a welcomed close encounter
A candle in the wind
that burns at both ends

It’s a lucky bet
A moon and star
that rises and sets

It’s a genie’s wish
with the best intentions
A trade-off or pay-off
A wealth to spread

Happyness are both the best and the worst, it is the giving and the taking… but the sweetness always has an aftertaste.

You can always entice me with chocolate and a book, Colleen! I really like:
‘Happiness is what you make it’
    and
    ‘A moon and star
    that rises and sets’.

Always a treat to come here Colleen…. Thank you for your usual deft and keenly felt writing. What a lovely tender as ever reminder of the simplicity and yet the transitory nature of happiness itself – Thankyou

An easy fix that’s worth it – that’s true.. like watching mindless netflix when the real world becomes too much to take…it has its own consequences though 🙂

  • 8 Penelope Notes:

You showed it right from the start with “the carrot on a stick” because happiness chased is rarely how it’s won.

I like how your poem encourages the reader to find happiness in simple things, I very much enjoyed the starting of your poem.

  • 10 Merril D Smith:

So true. It’s not something you can chase or capture.
I love the flow of this!

Such lovely wink and a nod to the little joys in life, reminding us to cherish them while they last! This piece truly captures that sense of whimsy and possibility.

We treat it like an end goal , always searching for it when it could be right there in front of us. I like the variety of ways you express the message. Very engaging.

A really great poem. Happiness can as you shared be very elusive. Your descriptions are so true. I really liked this on…
    A candle in the wind
    that burns at both ends

Love your opening lines, that joker in the deck, heck all of it really. “Happiness is what we make it” A poem we can all relate to.

  • 15 Ron. Lavalette:

I’m clapping my hands because this poem makes me feel like a room without a roof; clapping because happiness is the truth; because…

    Nice work, Sister. Thanks!!

Happiness is “. . . child’s play A coin toss wager A joker in a deck + + +.” you made is sound easy but sometimes moods are such as to make it hard. A fun read, Colleen.

Happiness is so elusive. At best we find it when we are looking for something else.

  • 19 Magaly Guerrero:

“Happy is… wealth to spread”. I love that. And believe it all the way to my bones.

  • 20 Geetashree Chatterjee:

I love how you define happiness. The burning of candle at both ends…

  • 21 Sherry:

I read the poem quick, when you put it up. I actually like all your poems! I like the ones written in our bedroom in our family home, when we were just starting to search for happiness! Love this one too! You always hit the nail on the head! In all your poems!
The comments here are your proof! XO
