We Bloom Where We’re Planted
Flowers are fragile
They’re pretty and they mean well
But they don’t last long in vases
Uprooted from their roots
they can’t be put back
After being picked
they’re the same but different
Their petals droop
like forlorn faces
The tender ties
of their lives are cut short
Flowers don’t last long
on kitchen tables
They wilt in the absence
of their untamed source

I so agree! But oh it is tempting to bring their beauty inside 🙂

Indeed, spring flowers should be kept where they are… enjoy them when walking instead, bring your coffee to the woods.

I do put flowers in vases on the table! For me, this is a personification of being uprooted or left without connection.

I don’t like cut flowers, prefer to have potted flowers that last longer. Better still, leave them in the garden. I have lots of meadow flower seeds to plant this year and I can’t wait!

I agree it’s sad, but I at least feel they’re getting a good, appreciative home with me whilst they last!

You could think tough like I do. Highbiscus take lots of unloving care. As do Cactus.

I agree, we all wither away from our roots and grounding…
But just for a while we might brighten alien spaces!

Beautiful! And I very much agree with the sentiments expressed.
Your poem makes the reader feel for the flowers

People are like flowers, especially the when they are tender new blooms.

So true and some that find themselves like flowers at tables not of their homelands bring their roots with them.

Forlorn faces – love this and how it paints a picture of how we all need roots and the source for life. Well done.

And you’ve just described why I’m not particularly fond of cut flowers. All right, I really dislike the practice. In my home, we call them pretty-for-now corpses.

I like how your poem takes a different perspective. There are many ways to see something.

Colleen, this is SO well written, and I am SO with you… but my wife likes flowers in vases… what can I do!?
Sincerely,
David

Oh I’m with you too! I always think of that but it’s so tempting to bring them in and stick them in a vase to brighten the room. especially the first daffodil of spring. That splash of yellow.

They are more beautiful in nature–like many things.

I don’t do cut flowers often but occasionally I’ll bring them inside and glory in their beauty.
I’m glad you explained your meaning – sometimes I can be a bit thick- headed. But once I got it, I can tell you I Got It and I agree. I love going away for a bit. But I love coming home more. If I had to pick up and replant away from my mountains my face would droop too.

just like people… especially love those last two lines here..

That is why I never send flowers for any occasion.
I always picture them dying. Plants have a better chance of survival.

Sorry I missed this before, Colleen. I can see how this works on several levels. Don’t we all wilt when cut off from our roots? Subtle and well penned.
