World Without a Songbird
An unjust sentence
A prison of silence
A dead dream
in a graveyard
of lost delight
A strangled beauty
A soul of poverty
A homeless angel
in a starless night

A homeless angel
in a starless night
A real sense of being lost. It resonates deeply.

“of lost delight ” – life sometimes feels just like that moments passing by too quickly. – Really nicely written.

The title is enough to incite sadness and even horror. I’m sure such a world would be as you go on to describe. And I see that it works the other way around too – that the comnditions you describe are equivalent to a world without a songbird, without colour, without light….

A sensitively written winsome piece of reality for much of existence experiencing/witnessing what is unjust and terribly sad.

The last two lines convey such sorrow. I can see the angel, struggling in the dark, alone… Sigh.

I’ve been listening to the birds since six o’clock this morning, Colleen, and can’t imagine a world without their songs – and here it is in your poem. A ‘dead dream in a graveyard of lost delight’ describes it perfectly.

A truly sad prospect – let us hope it never comes to pass…
April 12th, 2024 2:31 pm
You describe a world without songbirds quite well. Let’s hope it never happens.

Colleen, your poem has the feel of a nightmare or a premonition. May it never come to pass, my friend.
