Heliotropic
I turn in your direction
like a flower turns to the sun
I look for you
when I forget what it means
to be a flower
When you forget too
I lean on time
to stand up straight
I hold onto the memory
of the garden
I’m always looking
in your absence
for a recognizable sign
for a poem that enjoys the summer
that trusts the winter
that turns its tender bloom
into fruit

The imagery is utterly enchanting. The longing is so strong, but I agree with J. There is something here that makes me feel hopeful for the lovers.

I lean on on time to stand up straight…
love the use of nature here…the seasons. And beautiful thoughts.

“I lean on time” is such a clever, ambiguous phrase, and the whole poem is just great.

This is so lovely. I especially love these:

when I forget what it means
to be a flower
When you forget too
I lean on time
to stand up straight”

A delightful heliotropic poem, Colleen, from the opening simile to the poignant final stanza, especially the lines:
‘…a poem that enjoys the summer
that trusts the winter
that turns its tender bloom
into fruit’.

” turn in your direction
like a flower turns to the sun”
The essence of love – that uniquely human thing that binds us together – if we are lucky… Beautiful, Colleen!
