The Kite String
Hold tight before you let go
Let your pages yellow
and your roots show
Hold your youthful beauty
in a photo album
with the gardens of Eden
that you’ve plowed
Hold your tongue
when it’s time to listen
Don’t hold back your tears
Let go of belief
and held presumptions
Hold doubt at a safe distance
Hold space for grace
Hold hands at every chance
Let love hold you close
before you let go
before time unravels
like a kite string

hold, hold, hold, let go, hold … love the repetition of the first lines of your poem (and the slight letting go). beautiful <3

Tender and wise advice, Colleen. Why does it always seem to be seen in retrospect?

Hold space for grace… that’s beautiful…and yes.. hold hands at every chance…we forget to show what we feel…in time.

I love your wise and gentle imperatives, Colleen, especially:
‘Let love hold you close
before you let go
before time unravels
like a kite string’.

And stay away from high voltage lines.
A nicely framed metaphor on life.

A beautiful reminder we always need. I love the analogy the kite string and the lines:
“Let your pages yellow
and your roots show”
“Hold doubt at a safe distance”
“Hold space for grace”

Wise advice and beautifully written. The last stanza is almost a poem in itself.

Thank you for writing this and reading this poem at our brother Johnny’s memorial service yesterday. The poem was the perfect ending to a memorial tribute to Johnny, like a neat bow tied on top of thoughtfully given gift. ❤️
