13: Joe Lost His Glasses and I Got Wordle in Only Two Tries

1. Our grandson was here for a visit and playfully put Joe’s glasses on the little pumpkin that we grew in our garden. I saw him do it, but it didn’t fully register until I spotted the glasses the next day and after hours of looking for them and giving up.

2. According to my research, the percentage of those who win Wordle by the second guess is quite low, usually around 3% to 5%. Guessing it one try is even more rare: Since there are 2,315 possible target words in Wordle, the probability that you will guess the target in exactly one try is 1/2315 = 0.000432.

3. The below interview with my son Josh Copus, whose town of Marshall NC was destroyed by recent hurricane flooding, was the most hopeful yet, filmed 8 days in.

4. Josh “Whenever I’m away from town my heart gets heavy with the loss but as soon as I return I’m uplifted by the spirit of my community. I watched people I didn’t even know shovel mud out of the jail for 8 hours. I saw people who lost more than me have a better attitude and it made me realize that we could do this. My darkest moment was Saturday morning when I knew the town was destroyed but we still couldn’t get back in yet to start cleanup. I was scared that I wouldn’t have it in me to do it, but as soon as we got in there together and I saw the determination on the faces of my neighbors I knew that we had this.”

5. Yesterday I was studying Quantum Physics. Today it’s False Equivalencies: “This is Not That: “Not every topic warrants a “both sides” approach. Some viewpoints are simply not backed by empirical evidence or are based on false information and journalists have to be careful not to present them as legit debates. If they do, they are creating a “false equivalence.”

6. Think Hillary Clinton’s emails vs Trump’s indictments and conviction.

7. Counterpoint: After the nightly news comes the wood thrush / the monks of the forest sing a sundown service/ buried like jewels in canopy cathedrals / their clarity of truth shines with good news and rises above all falsehood

8. Disinformation or misinformation?

9. “If you were asked whether it’s okay with you that Saturn has rings, you would probably look very puzzled and say, “What’s that got to do with me? That’s a crazy question.” The truth is every single thing is that way. It has nothing to do with you. It has to do with the forces that caused it to be the way it is, and those forces stretch back billions of years. The total acceptance of this truth is surrender. You must let go of the part of you that thinks is has the right to like and dislike the result of billions of years of interactions.” Michael Singer

10. I was happy to see friends and get back on the dance floor after healing from a skin cancer removal that resulted in a gaping hole the size of one half of a ping pong ball.

11. There were two dogs at Dogtown this past weekend, which caused Joe to remark, “Dogs are coming to Dogtown now.”

12. Over the weekend, I attended a heartwarming Donor’s Appreciation Fundraiser Brunch for Blue Mountain School that was hosted by Red Rooster Coffee Roasters and brought school founders and current BMS teachers and supporters together to celebrate 43 years and share plans to forge ahead. More to come…

13. Now Joe keeps his sunglasses on the pumpkin.

I may have to use the Saturn thing on someone who spends a lot of time talking about something that they can’t do anything about. I can think of many examples.

I just checked my Wordle stats. I have gotten the word in one try three times. Each time it was my starter word. (aisle, route, cause)

I have gotten it in two tries 15 times. So, I actually have two starter words (so as to get all the vowels and 3-4 of the most used consonants), and once my second starter word was the word (adult). (And a few weeks later the word was noise, which had been my starter word until adult hit.)

Usually when I get it in two tries, it’s because my starter word had at least 3 of the letters and one of them was green. And then it’s a very good guess.

My current starter word is suite. My second is adorn. And when one of those hits, I’ll change them up again.

Today I got it in four.

I never even considered a win with the first word. I tend to use words with three vowels to start with and for word clues rather than actual guesses. I’ve only been playing since July. My starter words are ideal, ideas, irate, orate, route, raise, adios or adieu.

I recently found a site with all the past wordles used but I keep forgetting to check it. I’ve read that they don’t use the same word twice. https://www.techradar.com/news/past-wordle-answers

I haven’t played Wordle in months. I was on a long streak and then missed and didn’t go back to it. My starter words were “laugh” and “tires.” I usually got it in 4, with 3 next closest. I got it in 1 try once, and in 2 tries 12 times.
