Library Project Breaks Ground
-The following first appeared in The Floyd Press on May 1, 2025. A groundbreaking ceremony for the Jessie Peterman Memorial Library’s Pavilion Project drew a crowd of supporters on April 4. Fundraising by the Floyd County Building Fund and Floyd Friends of the Library began for the 850-square-foot structure on December 2023 and is nearing its fundraising target goal.
“The Pavilion Project demonstrates, once again, the support that Floyd County gives the library system,” said FCLBF Board President Pamela Cadmus who spoke at the event. “We are extremely grateful to have a dedicated staff who thinks outside the box, who every day comes up with ideas to provide greater services to Floyd County citizens,” Cadmus continued before thanking a range of county officials and supporters.
Cadmus reported that financial donations for the project spanned from $100,000 from an anonymous donor to a supporter who donates $10 a month. The Floyd Friends of the Library also contributed to the project by selling t-shirts and tote bags and raising awareness about the project.
Standing at the building site at the back right of the Library, adjacent to the trail to the Lineberry Park, Cadmus explained how the Pavilion will allow library staff to expand outdoor programing and host community events. Branch Manager Joann Verostko, who also spoke, envisions the pavilion as a flexible space in a scenic outdoor setting for children’s programming, concerts, art events, nature and science activities. Other speakers included Floyd County Administrator Dr. Linda Millsaps and Town Manager Andrew Morris.
Omnibuild General Contractors will be conducting The Pavilion construction with an estimated completion date set for October. – Colleen Redman
