Virginia is for Morgan Wade Lovers

I love to hear our Floyd homegirl rock (listen HERE), but her performance at The Harvester showed her softer side.

I’ve heard Morgan play at the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville, at The Grey Eagle in Asheville and in her hometown here in Floyd at Floydfest, The Floyd Country Store, Epperly Mill, Floyd Yoga Jam and of course the Dogtown Roadhouse where she first took to the stage for the first time. And now at The Harvester in Rocky Mount VA (an hour from Floyd).

The homey stage set fit the intimate mood. She talked with ease to the audience, like we were in her living room.

She sang with a depth of emotion and was freer with how she used her voice than I remember. Dare I say sweet?  Sultry? Dare I say heartache hurts so good? A baring of the soul comes to mind.

Add that to one of the best sound systems I’ve had the pleasure to enjoy, and I think it was my favorite Morgan Wade performance.

Honestly, I could hear most every word she sang and as a lyric orientated writer of poetry, and as someone who recognized Morgan’s talent as a lyricist since her first gig and her first CD Puppets with My Heart, it was wonderful.

Morgan has some time off before her next tour and plans to spend time with her family.  She talked a lot about the biscuits for breakfast that her grandma (who was in the audience) was going to make her, and we all got a kick out of that!

Speaking of Puppets, Morgan’s got a new album coming out of recovered songs from that album.  The name of the new album is The Party’s Over and includes some early songs from before she was sober, mixed with some newer ones. “These songs might be new to a lot of you, they are old friends to some of you,” she said. A couple of people kept shouting out “Kelly’s Drive.” I think one of them might have been me!

HERE’S the story I wrote about Morgan for The Floyd Press in 2019. And HERE is my 2018 write-up on Puppets with My Heart.
